Most people consider poker a game of chance. In truth, poker involves a lot of skill as well. Each type of poker game has betting rules that are unique to it. Here, we will review some basic betting rules that apply to all types of poker games.
In most poker games, you must bet something initially before the cards are dealt. Betting is typically done in a clockwise direction, and when your turn to bet comes, you have five choices:
Bet: If you are the first player to bet, you can bet any amount within the betting limits of that poker game. The amount you bet goes into the pot.
Check: As per the rules of poker, if there are no bets to you, you can choose not to put in any money into the pot. If no one bets, then the game will continue with everyone still in the hand. If someone else bets, you will have to make a decision to call, raise or fold.
Call: If there is a bet before you (say of 25 cents) and you wish to call it, you must bet enough to match the total amount of what has been bet i.e. 25 cents.
Raise: When you raise, you first bet enough to equal what has already been bet by another player (say 25 cents) and then you 'raise' the bet another amount (say 50 cents), for a total bet of 75 cents.
Fold: When you fold, you don't have to put any more money into the pot, however, you also lose any possibility of winning the pot.
Re-raise: As per poker game rules, if a player 'raises' you, but you feel that you have a very strong hand, you can 're-raise' your challenger and force him to put in another bet to stay in.
Check-raise: If you hold a very strong poker hand and want to take more than one bet from your opponent, you can check hoping he will bet so that you can raise. Now if he calls and your hand turns out to be as good as you think it is, you win two bets from him. However, this strategy should be used with caution.
Check-call: If you have a good hand and there is a high chance that your rival might have a better one, you may want to avoid being raised. In this scenario, you can check and call.
According to the poker betting rules, after all the cards have been dealt, the player (that hasn't folded) having the highest poker hand, wins the pot.
