The game of poker has many varieties. Texas Holdem and Omaha are probably the two most popular poker variants. Then there are betting variations. The winner is the one who has the best poker hand at the end of the last betting round.

No Limit Poker

Texas Holdem Poker is the most popular form of poker. An understanding of its poker rule guide is elementary to any poker game. These are the basic rules and minor variations that characterise other types of poker games.

According to the rules of poker, a 52-card deck is shuffled by the dealer. Two players to the left of the dealer place blind bets. Each player is then dealt two cards face down (called hole cards). The first round of betting, termed 'pre-flop' starts with the person to the left of the two blind bet players. The bet can be 'called' or 'raised' or 'folded'. At the end of this betting, the top card of the deck is discarded (or 'burnt') to avoid cheating. Now, three cards, called the 'flop', are dealt out face up. Another round of betting follows. The top card is again discarded. A community card, called the 'fourth street' is placed on the board before betting. The last community card is the 'fifth street'. After the last round of betting the remaining players reveal their cards. The player with the best poker hand, formed by a combination of hole cards and community cards, wins.

According to poker rule guide, in Omaha Poker the only difference is that instead of two hole cards, four are dealt out. The player may choose any two of these cards to form their poker hand towards the end of the game to go with exactly three of the community cards.

Limit Poker

As the name suggests, in this game, a limit is placed on the amount of betting. The range of betting is pre-determined.

In Fixed Limit Poker for each round there is a limit to the amount that can be bet. The minimum amount is the restriction for the first two rounds, while the maximum amount is the limit for the last two rounds. Raising the bet is similarly restricted.

For Spread Limit Poker, you are required to bet within a range, but there's no such specification for each betting round. However, you can't raise the bet any lower than the amount by which it has been raised preceding your chance.
