Poker is a common name for a variety of card games where players bet on the strength of the cards they hold, known as their "hand". Almost all types of poker games involve a common 'pot' consisting of the players' bets. According to rules of poker, at the end of the hand, this pot is awarded to the player who has the highest ranking hand.

Generally, all poker games start with some forced bets which help induce action. Different games have different rules of poker for bets. In Texas holdem or Omaha poker games, the forced bets are a small blind and a big blind. In Seven Card Stud, the forced bets are antes and the bring-in. The players bet using different actions like check, bet, call, raise, etc. Let us understand what each action involves according to rules of poker:

  • Check: This passes the action to the next player immediately on the left. If there is not yet a bet in the current betting round, a player can choose to check. Check only forfeits the chance to bet in the current betting round, it does not end your chance to claim the pot.
  • Bet: If a player bets, the other players may choose to fold, call or raise.
  • Fold: This act forfeits all interest in the pot. A player who folds is not allowed to bet any additional money for the current game and cannot win the pot.
  • Call: The act of calling means the player matched the current bet made by his fellow players. If there has been a bet on the current round of play, a player may call to remain in the hand.
  • Raise: As per poker rules, a player may raise if there has been a bet on the current betting round. The act of raising requires the player to match the current bet and make a higher one. All remaining players have to re-raise or call the raise to continue the game.
  • After the last bet is called, the showdown takes place. The player with the best five-card hand wins the game. However, there is not always a showdown. When a player bets or raises and all the remaining players fold, he wins the pot.
